4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge

April 26, 2017
The 4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge is the annual celebration of our pollinator advocacy campaign Healthy Bees, Healthy Lives. This campaign was instrumental in passing 2 pieces of important pollinator legislation in 2014. We are still actively working to educate the public about the issues facing honey bees and other pollinators. Much progress has been made for pollinators since, due to grassroots efforts by the many groups and citizens spreading awareness and taking individual actions. However, as we enter a different administration, there has never been a more challenging time for our precious pollinators. As beekeepers, business owners and people concerned about where our food comes from, we know from experience that we must advocate for the honey bee and all pollinators struggling to live in our modern systems of agriculture, eco-systems and urban landscapes.
To show love for pollinators, we invite talented pastry chefs from the Twin Cities to compete in a fun challenge using dandelion honey as their only sweetener. Dandelions are one of the first flowers in the spring where bees find food. For this reason, the French sometimes call it “Love Honey”. The public, for the most part, does not show dandelions love. There is a pervasive thought that dandelions should be sprayed, removed and taken out of our landscapes, especially in lawns. Pesticides play a huge role in the way we grow food and treat our landscapes and they are hurting the very pollinators responsible for our food. We need to start loving our bees and therefore our flowers and food. Symbolically dandelions speak to this idea. Plus, the honey is delicious.
