Why would a climate change organization focus on zero waste, you may ask?
- Many single-use packaging items contain toxins that leach into food and water.
- Plastic pollution in our waterways is becoming more difficult to clean up and more hazardous to wildlife, fresh drinking water, ecosystems, and our bodies.
- Extracting more oil, building more pipelines, and producing more plastic is only going to increase pollution and accelerate the effects of climate change.
- One of our favorite reads of the year, Drawdown, lists focusing on solutions around our use of materials, including recycling, composting, and reducing food waste, would result in 111.78 GIGATONS REDUCED CO2 and $1.04 TRILLION NET OPERATIONAL SAVINGS globally!

March 20, 2019Beer, bees, and solar farm honey—what’s not to love? Bringing together a few of the world’s greatest things, Fresh Energy pairs up with the craft beer brewers at 56 Brewing who are back at it again with their deliciously crisp (and strong!) IPA brewed with honey from pollinator-friendly solar arrays. Owners and brewers Kale Johnson and Nick Chute drew on inspiration from the farm-to-table innovators at Spoon and Stable to create a perfectly crushable, hoppy beer—just in time to welcome warmer weather. Join us at 56 Brewing’s garden to growler taproom for this special event where we’ll celebrate the bees with a special tasting of Solarama Crush.
A variety of beer, kombucha and soda will be available for purchase. Proceeds from the happy hour will be donated to Fresh Energy. All are welcome to join us at this free event. Registration is encouraged but not required. Let’s raise one—or two—to the bees!

April 23, 2019A natural oasis in the heart of the city, Crosby Farm Regional Park is nestled at the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota rivers. Enjoy the beauty of early spring at this riverside park while helping protect native plants beneficial to our local wildlife and waters at this annual tradition on Tuesday, April 23, from 6-8 pm.
Alongside Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) staff, volunteers will help protect important members of the native plant community by removing the extremely invasive plant garlic mustard, then make the pledge to return to the area to continue this much-needed work.
Please note that we ask all registrants at this particular event to sign a Pledge to Pull, promising to remove garlic mustard in this area of Crosby Park in the weeks following this training and evening pull.
Thanks to continued volunteer efforts throughout the years, we've been able to see slow but steady improvement in the ephemeral patch, and have expanded the volunteer restoration work areas to include the Crosby lakeshore!
All are welcome, however, capacity is limited and registration is required. Learn more and register at https://fmr.org/events/2019/04/23/pledge-pull-garlic-mustard-crosby-farm-parkTo learn more and register, visit https://fmr.org/events/2019/04/23/pledge-pull-garlic-mustard-crosby-farm-park
