  • - Rain garden talk + tending
    Rain garden talk + tending

Category: General Rain garden talk + tending

    October 14, 2020

Join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) on Wednesday, October 15 from 3-5 pm for a rain garden talk and tending at Falcon Ridge Middle School in Apple Valley. We'll weed the overgrown rain gardens at this site, providing more space for native plants to return and flourish. And as these plants return, they'll provide habitat while their deep roots hold the soil in place, improving rainwater absorption and preventing pollution.
Then, we'll cover the basics of rain gardens in your yards. In our talk, we'll describe what a rain garden is, resources to build one and why they are so important for our river, lakes and wetlands.
All are welcome, however, capacity is limited and registration required. All supplies and training will be provided and volunteers will work closely with FMR staff. Due to COVID-19, masks and social distancing are required.

    October 24, 2020

What's one of the simplest, high-impact ways to save water and help protect our watershed? Using a rain barrel.
For conservation and for pollution prevention, installing a rain barrel to collect and store rainwater for use on your lawn and gardens is a simple but powerful way to make a difference for the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Thanks to Great Lakes Coca-Cola of Eagan, Friends of the Mississippi River has used syrup containers for participants to turn into rain barrels.
Register to reserve your rain barrel and kit. Then, pickup your barrel from our St. Paul location on Saturday, October 24, from 10 am-12 pm. Lastly, join us for a virtual workshop as we guide you through assembling your barrel on Wednesday, October 28. If you can't make it to the live workshop, no problem - we'll record it and send out the video to everyone who registers.

  • - Halloween brush haul + lunch at HAFA Farm
Halloween brush haul + lunch at HAFA Farm

Category: General Halloween brush haul + lunch at HAFA Farm

    October 31, 2020

Join Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) on Saturday, October 31, from 9 am-12 pm, for a Halloween brush haul at the Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA) Farm.
We will remove pre-cut buckthorn from the forest on the HAFA Farm property. Buckthorn is extremely hardy and able to thrive in a variety of soil and light conditions. It out-competes native plant species that are vital for increased habitat and biodiversity. By removing buckthorn, we'll prevent new seeds from spreading into previously restored areas. And, we'll clear the way for native shrubs and wildflowers to return and thrive in the woodland.
We will provide individually packaged lunches at the end of the event! Join us for this unique opportunity to work at a new site and celebrate the end of FMR's volunteer season.
All are welcome, however, capacity is limited and registration required. All supplies and training will be provided and volunteers will work closely with FMR staff. Due to COVID-19, masks and social distancing are required.
