Calling all Northsiders!

Join your neighbors, elected officials, city and park board staff, and FMR to walk and talk about the future of Dowling between the Mighty Mississippi and Lyndale Avenue North in Minneapolis. This Dowling Avenue path to the river is currently the only direct route to the Upper Harbor Terminal, soon to be redeveloped to potentially feature a riverfront concert venue, new bike trails, and more.

For a year and a half, FMR has been collecting residents' concerns and ideas to improve this connection to the river. We'll bring that information and look forward to your new insights and ideas about how to make walking and biking to the river easier and more enjoyable.

More details to come! But, for now, please register below and begin to invite your friends and neighbors. There will be food, fun and hopefully a bit of sun! All are welcome. Due to the nature of this event, full participation involves walking or otherwise traveling half of a mile outdoors along N Dowling Avenue. A school bus will be provided to transport attendees between Folwell Park and the walk start/end. Additionally, those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Pack a No Waste Lunch

A ‘no-waste lunch’ is a meal that does not end up in the trash. Buy food in bulk and put it in reusable containers to carry to school or work. Packing your food in reusables is typically less expensive and creates less waste than buying food that comes in disposable containers.

Think Twice About Bottled Water

If you live in an area with clean drinking water, fill a reusable bottle with tap water and bring it with you wherever you go to avoid buying bottled water. The U.S. sends 2 million tons of plastic water bottles to landfills each year—and producing those bottles requires oil and emits carbon dioxide. Some restaurants in the Twin Cities feel so strongly against bottled water that they refuse to sell it. Learn more.

More than 600 cities nationwide are not waiting for federal action on climate change—they are taking matters into their own hands. The U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement is one way cities are reducing their greenhouse gas emissions and urging government to take action. Reduce Waste When You Travel

Travelers can generate a lot of waste and pollution, even with the best intentions. But it isn’t hard to make a few changes that can help us avoid a lot of trash and otherwise green up our time away from home. It is our responsibility to take care of the places we inhabit, and to show that we respect the place we are traveling to, that others inhabit.

Start an Organics Recycling Program

Establishing an organics recycling program is a great way to reduce the amount of trash an organization or household disposes. Organics include all food waste and non-recyclable or food-soiled paper products and can make up approximately 25 percent of what we throw away. This article offers tips on how to start your own program.

Reduce Paper Waste at the Office

Office paper is highly recyclable, but reducing or preventing paper waste is even more cost effective than recycling. Some ideas for reducing office paper waste:

Double-sided copying and printing.
Reusing paper. Keep a collection box by the copy machine for bad copies so the second side can be reused.
Make use of electronic communication.
Use smaller cover sheets or eliminate the cover sheet all together.
Reuse items from old packaging.
Reuse materials in-house, through clients, customers and consumers.
Consider buying the most environmentally-friendly paper (100% post-consumer recycled) to stock in your printers, copiers and fax machines.
