4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge

Category: General 4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge

    April 26, 2017

The 4th Annual Dandelion Honey Pastry Chef Challenge is the annual celebration of our pollinator advocacy campaign Healthy Bees, Healthy Lives. This campaign was instrumental in passing 2 pieces of important pollinator legislation in 2014. We are still actively working to educate the public about the issues facing honey bees and other pollinators. Much progress has been made for pollinators since, due to grassroots efforts by the many groups and citizens spreading awareness and taking individual actions. However, as we enter a different administration, there has never been a more challenging time for our precious pollinators. As beekeepers, business owners and people concerned about where our food comes from, we know from experience that we must advocate for the honey bee and all pollinators struggling to live in our modern systems of agriculture, eco-systems and urban landscapes.
To show love for pollinators, we invite talented pastry chefs from the Twin Cities to compete in a fun challenge using dandelion honey as their only sweetener. Dandelions are one of the first flowers in the spring where bees find food. For this reason, the French sometimes call it “Love Honey”. The public, for the most part, does not show dandelions love. There is a pervasive thought that dandelions should be sprayed, removed and taken out of our landscapes, especially in lawns. Pesticides play a huge role in the way we grow food and treat our landscapes and they are hurting the very pollinators responsible for our food. We need to start loving our bees and therefore our flowers and food. Symbolically dandelions speak to this idea. Plus, the honey is delicious.

Climate Change Resiliency and Stormwater Management, presented by Dr. Christie Manning.

    Macalester-Plymouth United Church, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm - MAP
RSVP for free childcare by 4/17 to mgcc@macgrove.org
Climate change is no longer a distant theoretical possibility and we know, in general, what climate change will bring to our region: stronger and more sudden storms, warmer and icier winters, a tendency toward longer dry spells, higher likelihood of extreme heat waves. All of these effects have implications for management of our stormwater resources. This workshop will focus on how our community can become better prepared for stormwater challenges. We will introduce current best practices in stormwater management, as well as recent research findings on why people get involved in stormwater management and other resilience-building efforts. Come to learn, to share your knowledge and ideas, and to help create a more resilient Macalester-Groveland.

Category: General Make & Take Rain Barrel Workshop - Just $35!

    May 25, 2017

What's one of the simplest, high-impact ways to save water and help protect our local watersheds? Using a rain barrel. Thanks to Coca-Cola Refreshments of Eagan, Friends of the Mississippi River has 30 used syrup containers for participants to turn into rain barrels on Thursday, May 25th, from 6:00-7:00 PM. During the course of this workshop, participants will be provided with the necessary parts ($35 per kit) and guided through the process of converting these containers into allies for a cleaner Minnesota. Taking place at Wood Lake Nature Center, the workshop will begin with a presentation on how home lawn and garden practices impact our waters and how we can make a difference. Next, we’ll discuss the watershed-friendly benefits of rain barrels in more detail, then review how to build, incorporate, install and maintain them. With guidance from FMR staff, participants will then build a rain barrel to take home.

All are welcome! Capacity is limited and registration is required by May 22nd. For more information, including registration information, visit us at http://fmr.org/events/2017/05/25/make-take-rain-barrel-workshop-just-35
